Week 5

While looking for ideas for medi@rt’s documentary, I found an organization called SALT based in New York City. SALT is a non-profit organization serving inner city teens through photojournalism instruction. Their mission is to engage, inspire, and empower kids by teaching them to think creatively, solve problems, and speak into their culture with a positive voice. Even though we have different programs, our mission statements go hand in hand, and I thought we could use them as a resource as we set up our curriculum.

Their approach involves five parts starting with making a connection with fellow students and those teaching. They learn the process of critiquing and learning to give and receive feedback. They spend time journaling and writing reflections and analysis. They receive instruction through hands-on workshops and in turn put learning into action. The assignments that they receive apply the skill they learned in class. On their website, they have the students work and portfolios, sort of as proof of what they are doing. I thought we could incorporate that aspect into our website and documentary!

Here is an example:

Though we are not doing the same thing I really liked the way they set up their website and their visual media. They’ll definitely be a source of inspiration in the future!
